'CALIFORNIA GREY' REVIEW
The Wire May 2006
by Jon Dale

After several albums under his own name, Western Australian Matt Rosner has just released his first EP as Pablo Dali, California Grey (Meupe 3’’ CD-R). Rosner is obsessed with miniature loops – everything in his short, slight compositions circles around the same point of gravity, with little brooks of electronic running rivulets over strummed guitars. This perfectly polite music lacks spark. Too often, it reminds me of Lester Bang’s not exactly flattering description of Brian Eno’s short Ambient studies as “little pools of sound on the outskirts of silence”. California Grey is pleasant enough, but there in lies the problem – Rosner needs to stop trying to be so nice.
